South Africa’s health minister criticized “draconian” travel measures imposed on countries in southern Africa after governments from the U.S. to Britain to Australia tightened restrictions on travel from the region .
The new coronavirus variant is snowballing through Europe, with the U.K. now reporting two infections. Health Minister Sajid Javid said on Twitter the cases were linked and connected with travel to southern Africa.
Countries elsewhere on the continent also are investigating suspected cases of the new variant. Belgium confirmed one, a regional official in Germany said it’s “highly likely” the strain arrived there, the Netherlands is researching 61 new infections, and the Czech Republic is examining a suspected case.
The reports come as governments from the U.S. to Britain to Australia tightened restrictions on travel from countries in southern Africa. The U.K. is adding four more nations to its “red list” effective Sunday morning. In the aftermath, South Africa may announce more stringent lockdown measures to curb the variant’s spread.
