South Africa's president “deeply disappointed” by travel restrictions due to Omicron variant | FULL

  • South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said Sunday during an address to the nation that he is “deeply disappointed” by a decision by several countries to restrict travel from a number of southern African countries over fears about the Omicron COVID-19 variant.
Ramaphosa said countries had pledged to restart international travel during the G20 summit in Rome, Italy, adding that such travel bans “unfairly discriminate” and will damage the economies of affect countries.
He called the restrictions “completely unjustified” and said the decision to restrict travel was “not informed by science” and would undermine the ability of countries like his to recover from the pandemic.
First discovered in South Africa, the Omicron variant has now been detected in Britain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Botswana, Israel, Australia and Hong Kong.
