It is at the extreme South-West of Africa that the Jackass penguin (also known as the African penguin) anchored. On the beaches and coastal islands of South Africa and Namibia, it sunbathes on the sand and sings loudly, like a donkey! However, life under the African sun is not so peaceful for a penguin. Since June 2010, this tourism icon has been classified as "endangered" by the IUCN. Overfishing? New predation threats? Guano shortage?... A mystery! One thing is certain, the African penguin population is continuing to decrease with alarming speed.
