The highlight of my trip to East Africa was Kilimanjaro, known by the local Chagga people as Kilema Kyaro or ‘that which cannot be conquered’. It took six days to reach base camp and after a brief rest we commenced our climb to the summit. For several hours we walked in silence through the dark experiencing sub-freezing temperatures, burning winds, exhaustion and altitude sickness. Only a small price to stand high above the clouds on the ‘Roof of Africa’ and watch the sun burst out of the sky. It was a mentally and physically grueling adventure, but one which I feel privileged to have experienced.
